When launching a new site on OpenScholar it's important to retire your old site. Part of the going live process should include notifying the former hosting provider that you've moved on and the old site can be decomissioned. Typically, this is a simple request to firstname.lastname@example.org or your school's IT team.
A few tips...
- Consider backing up your old site in case you need to recover legacy data. Desktop apps such as Sitesucker can be helpful.
- If you have a few specific, high-traffic pages where the URL has changed you can set up a page level redirect in OpenScholar for those URLs.
- After a few months, retire page-level redirects for non-existent URLs – over time, users will learn to navigate the new site and update their bookmarks.
