Set Up Your Site

When you first set up your site, you'll be asked to choose the site's settings:

Here is an overview of those settings:

Site URL

Choose a URL that is relevant to your site. You also have the ability to request and apply a custom domain to your OpenScholar site once you have finished building your site.

Type of site

The type of site (or pre-set) that you choose will determine the Apps that are available and enabled. Also some features are dependent on the pre-set. For example, only "Department Site" pre-set has the ability to create subsites. It will also create a standard menu structure (or information architecture). Learn more about these pre-sets.

Your choice here will determine the Apps that are enabled by default. Unlike, "Type of site" it does not determine the availability of Apps.

Site Visibility

Choose the site access and visibility level. You can change the Site Visibility at any time. 

The options are:

Public on the web  - Anyone on the Internet can find and access the site. No sign-in is required to view the site content. (although files can be PIN protected). Search engines will index the site and the search engine optimization (SEO) will be enabled for the site.

Anyone with the link - Anyone with the link can access the site. No sign-in is required to view the site content. However the search engines, such as Google, Bing, etc. will not index the site pages. If you plan to use a custom domain for your site, it is important to prevent search engines from indexing the site's default OpenScholar URLs.

Invite only during site creation -  Private during construction, only people with explicit granted permission can access this site. Sign-in is required. In other words, for someone to access the site, the site administrators would need to add or create each OpenScholar account as a member of the site.

Harvard Community - Only the Harvard Community will be able to access your site. Sign-in via Harvard ID and PIN  is required. This will restrict access to the site to anyone with a standard Harvard ID (Harvard faculty, students and staff).

Groups within the Harvard Community - Only select groups at Harvard will be able to view your site. Click Edit Groups to search for and select groups to add to your site. Please see our Groups within the Harvard Community page for more information on this setting.

NOTE: You can change your Site Visibility at any time

User Account Information

If you are creating a site for the first time you'll be asked to create account information. After you've filled out this information, click "Create your site" and your site will be created within a few seconds.
